Long Island Man Found Asleep In Car Had Loaded Handgun, Police Say

A Long Island man found asleep in a car was carrying a loaded handgun, police said.

It happened on Saturday, May 30 at 5:45 a.m. in Uniondale.

That's when Nassau County Police officers responded to the vicinity of Uniondale Avenue and Jerusalem Avenue to check on the well being of a man who appeared unconscious in the driver’s seat while stopped in the road. 

As officers awoke the man, he began making suspicious movements towards his waistband, according to police.

Officers removed the man from the vehicle for safety reasons and noticed a bulge in his waist area, police said.

Officers were able to safely recover a loaded handgun from his right-side waist area. 

The man, Elijah Johnson, 22, of Great Neck, was placed into custody without further incident.

Johnson has been charged with:

  • Criminal possession of a weapon,
  • Criminal possession of a firearm, 
  • Unlawful possession of marijuana 

He is due to be arraigned on Sunday, May 31 in Mineola.
